Chadian President Idriss Deby, In Power For Over 25 Years, Wins 5th Term

President Idriss Deby

The Chadian Electoral Commission said President Idriss Deby, has won an overwhelming victory in the April 10 election, extending his 26 year rule.

Deby who took power in a 1990 military coup, has been re-elected every five years since 1996.

The commission said veteran opposition leader Saleh Kebzabo came second with nearly 13 percent, while Deby took nearly 62 percent of the latest votes.

It said Deby faced 13 challenges in the election, which was preceded by protests calling for an end to his long rule.

A group of opposition politicians accused the government of rigging the election.

Debt has won praise for his fight against the Islamist group Boko Haram but he has however not been able to lift more than half of the country's population out of poverty.

When you hear of a man ruling his country for over 25 years, you learn to thank people like our ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan.
Congratulations President Deby! If your people are happy, we are happy. :)
