The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) announced the closure of the university for one month following the violent students' protest on Monday over the new tuition fee policy.
All students have been directed to vacate their hostel accommodation, while the student union and all it's affiliate bodies have been suspended with immediate effect.
The UNIPORT management had in 2015, adopted a policy which made tuition fee a prerequisite for student's participation in examination, a policy which compelled defaulting students to repeat a whole academic session.
The students are demanding the removal of the policy, which they argue, is unfair to poor students.
The police are currently trying to contain the situation.
