NIGERIA: FG To Employ Graduates, Pay The Poor

President Buhari & Vice President Osibanjo

The Federal government plans to pay poor people an approximate sum of N5,000 ($25) per month to try to ease poverty and stimulate the economy. This will cost $300 million per annum.

"One million poor and vulnerable Nigerians would receive N5,000 monthly," Vice president Osibanjo said on Thursday, in a statement outlining government priorities for the next 12 months.

The government will also employ 500,000 graduates as voluntary teachers while they choose jobs in their chosen careers, he said.

The initiatives were part of Buhari's election campaign. The former military ruler has come under pressure for weeks now due to fuel shortages. The economy is also suffering from the global slump in crude oil prices.
