Boko Haram Recruits Youth By Offering Them Loans - Nigerian Military

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters on Wednesday said that Boko Haram insurgents now resort to financial inducements to get young persons recruited.

When the insurgency started, the groups leader Muhammed Yusuf, achieved a recruitment bonanza by constantly blaming government for the socio economic woes that plunged the populace into hardship and poverty.

Yusuf who was killed in 2009, also provided his followers with financial support to pick up trades that had no link to government or western education (boko) which he said was sinful (haram).

His successor, Abubakar Shekau, dumped that persuasive way of recruitment for a deadlier and more aggressive way of recruiting members.

The group now appears to be reverting to the old approach of financial inducement, the military said.
